California has one of the worst defenses in all of college football. They’ve given up 41.3 points per game on average, which ranks fifth-worst in the country. Opponents have also been piling up the yardage in those games as well at 488. USC is considerably better on that side of the football and they give up nearly half as many points on average. At one point the Trojans were 1-3 on the season and unsure of their future, but three straight wins in conference with solid defensive play have them back at 4-3 overall with a chance to stay in contention in the Pac-12 South standings.
They’ll have to keep winning an get some help as both Colorado and Utah are ahead of them, but the Trojans can now begin to believe they will have a solid season again. Despite having a terrible defense, California is 4-3 on the season. The problem for them is the final five games on the year won’t be easy as the Golden?Bears take on USC, Washington, Washington State, Stanford and UCLA. One could make an arugment each of those teams are better than the Golden Bears, especially with Cal’s struggles on defense.
USC has found a solid quarterback with Sam Darnold, he is coming off a five touchdown performance against Arizona. Davis Webb is the QB for the Golden Bears and it seems like he throws five TDs each week, though he’s actually only done it three times. In three other games he’s thrown for four touchdowns. Cal’s offense can move it up and down the field, but turnovers will be key. The Golden?Bears are plus-2 in the turnover department this season, USC comes in at plus-1. Cal’s offense will be tested but getting two full possessions here can help.
