A pair of power five conference teams will face off in Week 1 of the college football season when the Minnesota Golden Gophers play host to the Oregon State Beavers. The game is scheduled for a 9:00 p.m. start time on Thursday and it will be televised live on the Big Ten Network. The Minnesota Golden Gophers are looking to rebound from a 6-7 season last year, a season that saw them open and play tough against TCU but also really struggle in Big Ten play.
Mitch Leidner is back to lead the offense, last year he combined for 20 touchdowns through the air and on the ground. Minnesota needs that production to continue to rise, especially if they are going to take the next step to being better in conference play. The defense has to get better as well, last year they surrendered better than 25 points per game on average.
Oregon State is coming off a 2-10 season under Gar Andersen, who left Wisconsin to come back to the West Cost. Andersen led the Badgers to two wins over Minnesota while he was there, but both of those teams were much better than what he currently has at Oregon State.
The Beavers had a potentially good young quarterback in Seth Collins, but they moved him out to wide receiver to make the team better. Getting him the football will be a major priority, but Oregon State does also have a couple of strong play makers in Jordan Villamin and Victor Bolden.
Oregon State’s defense was terrible last year, giving up 37 points per game just isn’t going to get it done. The Beavers have to play better on that side of the ball in this one.
