The ninth-ranked Tennessee Volunteers open up their college football season in hosting the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Thursday. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on the SEC Network. Currently the college football odds for the game have the Volunteers favored by a comfortable margin.

There’s a lot of talk about the Tennessee Volunteers being one of those teams this season. The Vols open up ranked inside the Top 10 and many believe they will be able to push the Florida Gators for the SEC East this season.

Tennessee and App State are meeting for the first time as the Mountaineers are new to the Division 1 level, but they are certainly no strangers to playing big time opponents. The question here for the Vols is whether or not they can stay focused on the Mountaineers given their big game the following week.

Tennessee will play Virginia Tech at Bristol Motor Speedway Sept. 10, could there be some looking ahead by the Vols here? It’s possible, but Butch Jones will have to have his team ready to go on an upset-minded Mountaineer squad.
