The New York Yankees are hosting the Boston Red Sox tonight in Major League Baseball action. The game is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on the MLB Network. The MLB Odds for the game have the Yankees favored to pick up the victory at home.
This is a big series for both teams, maybe more so for the Yankees who find themselves 7.5 games out of first place in the AL East. The Red Sox are tied for second place and just made the first big splash of the trade season, picking up Drew Pomeranz from San Diego.
Many think the Yankees will sell off some of their assets by the trade deadline and if they get swept here by Boston it would start to make more sense.
Tonight they send Michael Pineda to the mound. He has struggled this season at 3-8 with a 5.38 ERA, though five of his losses have come on the road. His ERA splits show Pineda really has just been pitching poorly this season no matter the venue, he’s also given up 15 home runs (12 at home) in the first half. In two starts against the Red Sox this season Pineda is 0-1 over 11 innings, he’s given up four earned runs in that time.
Steven Wright, the knuckle-baller, gets the start tonight for the Red Sox. He’s 10-5 with a 2.68 ERA on the season and was one of the stronger starters in the American League the first half.
Wright made one start against the Yankees this season, going nine innings and allowing just three hits in a victory. In eight starts on the road this season Wright has a 4-4 record but a fantastic 1.88 ERA, he’s thrown three complete games away from home as well.
The Yankees need a reboot but it won’t be easy against Wright. Pineda has really struggled to this point in the year and barring a fantastic start tonight, the Yankees could struggle.
