The Toronto Blue Jays are hosting the Detroit Tigers tonight in Major League Baseball action. The game is scheduled for a 7:07 p.m. start time and the MLB Odds for the contest have the Blue Jays favored to pick up the win at home.
Detroit finally picked up a win against Cleveland yesterday, the team’s first this season in 12 games. Nothing the Tigers did in any of those previous games led to a victory, but finally Wednesday they were able to get back in the win column.
Now the Tigers find themselves alone in second place in the AL Central, but still six and a half games back. Detroit hasn’t been a great road team this season at 22-24, Toronto on the other hand has been solid in home contests.
The Blue Jays will throw Drew Hutchison tonight as they look to win a sixth-straight game. Hutchison, a spot starter, is 1-0 this season with a 5.40 ERA covering just 6 2/3 innings.
This is the opening game in a four-game series, tonight Detroit will send Justin Verlander to the mound. He’s 8-6 on the year with a 4.11 ERA covering 17 starts. Verlander isn’t the same fire-baller he once was, but he has figured out a way to still be an effective pitcher. Minus a couple of really bad starts against Cleveland where he gave up 15 combined earned runs and one terrible start against Pittsburgh where he surrendered seven earned runs, Verlander has allowed four earned or less in each of his remaining starts. Current Blue Jays have 133 career at bats against him, Edwin Encarnacion and Justin Smoak have both gone deep multiple times.
The Jays are streaking, the Tigers now have some confidence after picking up a win over Cleveland. The edge goes to Verlander over Hutchison.
