The LSU Tigers are hosting the Florida Gators tonight in SEC College Basketball action. The game is scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN. Currently the betting odds for the game have the Tigers favored to pick up the victory at home.
LSU has the no-doubt top overall player to be drafted in Ben Simmons, but they won’t be playing in the NCAA Tournament this season. LSU has lost several key games this season and although half of them are against Top 100 RPI teams, they just have not done enough to find a way into the tournament. It doesn’t help that the most recent stretch has seen them lose three straight games overall and four of the last five, though three of those contests did come on the road.
Key losses early in the season are probably going to spell the end for LSU. Defeats at Houston (decent loss) in addition to losses against Marquette, NC State and Wake Forest could prove to be the deciding factor. Had LSU won each of those games the resume would look quite a bit stronger.
Florida will be playing in the NCAA Tournament. The Gators own the 42nd best RPI on the year and have played the 10th toughest strength of schedule. They only have two Top 50 wins on the season and only one of those came at home, but overall Florida has seven wins against the Top 100. Much like LSU the Gators have struggled of late, losing back-to-back games to South Carolina and Vanderbilt, a pair of teams that should be playing in the tournament as well. Florida really can’t afford a loss here tonight, but a 3-7 road record does not bode well for them. LSU obviously needs a win and somehow could find its way back into the tournament discussion, but they’d have to win each of the final three games plus make a deep run into the SEC finals.
