The Michigan State Spartans are on the road in Big Ten College Basketball action tonight, taking on the Northwestern Wildcats. The game is scheduled for a 9:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN. Currently the betting odds for the game have the Spartans favored by a couple of possessions in this road contest.

Northwestern has never made the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats free fall in the Big Ten standings isn’t helping their case for this year, either. The Cats come in 15-6 overall but are just 3-5 in conference play, they have yet to beat a ranked team all season, going 0-4.

Tonight they get another chance as No. 12 Michigan State visits Evanston. The Spartans are only 4-4 in Big Ten play this season but are still 17-4 overall. Since the return of Denzel Valentine from injury, Michigan State had stumbled a bit by losing three straight to Iowa, Wisconsin and Nebraska. Tom Izzo’s team responded well in its next game, knocking off Maryland in East Lansing.

Michigan State is clearly more talented than Northwestern, but it comes down to execution for Sparty. They are an excellent rebounding team and will have to hit the glass once again in this one, avoiding second chance opportunities for Northwestern.

Both teams can help themselves out with a win here, but history proves that Michigan State can get it done in this spot while Northwestern cannot.
