The Utah Utes are hosting the San Diego State Aztecs tonight in college basketball action. The game is scheduled for a 9:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Currently the college basketball betting odds for the game have the Utes favored to pick up the victory at home.

This is another contest in the ESPN 24-hour college basketball marathon and one of the better ones between solid programs. It’s a bit surprising this game isn’t being played later because both schools are on the West Coast, but it is a great time slot for an expected defensive battle.

Last year the Aztecs gave up just under 54 points per game, the second best mark in the country. Utah was also solid on that end of the court, but must replace Delon Wright, who is now playing in the NBA.

Jakob Poeltl was awesome in his team’s opening game of the season, scoring 26 points and pulling in 11 boards while blocking four shots in the win over Southern Utah. Poeltl was very accurate with the ball in his hands, missing only three shots to lead a group of Utes that scored at least 20 — Jordan Loveridge poured in 24, Kyle Kuzma added 23. The multiple options for Utah make them a solid team on that end of the floor, but they will be tested tonight against the Aztecs.

San Diego State beat Illinois State 71-60 in their opening contest; Jeremy Hemsley led the Aztecs with 20 points.

Both teams can rebound, play defense and slow it down offensively. San Diego State has won six straight games over Utah in this series, which has become a pretty solid little rivalry on the court.

This one should be close and Steve Fischer’s team has held the edge, but Utah at home gets it done tonight.
