The second-ranked Michigan State Spartans play host to the Purdue Boilermakers in Big Ten college football action Saturday. The game is scheduled for a noon start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Currently the betting odds for the game have the Spartans favored by a comfortable margin in this one.
Michigan State has not covered a point spread yet this season, but they shouldn’t have any problems with Purdue in this one. The Boilermakers are just a terrible team, giving up a ton of points and Big Ten play will more than likely be tough for them.
Sparty has won six straight games over Purdue, but they have played tough against Michigan State the last two games, losing by a combined seven points. The Spartans are looking for a Big Ten title this season and the upcoming contest with top-ranked Ohio State has been circled on their schedule, but opening up the conference slate with a big win over Purdue has to be on the checklist.
Defense has been a struggle for the Boilermakers this season as they rank 97th in the country in total defense. Opponents are averaging better than 440 yards per game against Purdue, Michigan State will look to take advantage of that. The Spartans love to run the football and rank only 93rd in total offense, but they have scored 17 touchdowns on the year, which is an average of better than 33 points per game.
Connor Cook leads the Spartans, he’s thrown for nine touchdowns and better than 800 yards on the year. While Michigan State’s defense hasn’t been great since Pat Narduzzi left, the offense will keep this one at a comfortable distance from the Boilers.
