The Michigan Wolverines are on the road in Big Ten College Football action on Saturday, taking on the Maryland Terrapins. The game is scheduled for a noon start time and it will be televised live on the Big Ten Network. Currently the betting odds for the game have the Wolverines favored to pick up the win on the road.
This game was originally scheduled to be played at 8 p.m. on Saturday night, but with Hurricane Joaquin bearing down on the east coast, officials moved the start time up to noon. Showers and cool weather are still expected to impact the game despite the earlier kickoff and that’s no problem for the Wolverines.
Michigan comes in with the No. 2 total defense in the country this season, having allowed just 9.5 points per game and opponents are gaining just 203.8 yards per contest against the Wolverines. Last week BYU was in Ann Arbor and the Cougars mustered just 105 yards of total offense in the loss. Outside of the Utah game, where Michigan did throw a pick-six with eight minutes to go in the game, the Wolverines have looked very good. Michigan held Devontae Booker to under 70 yards rushing in that one as well, so the defense has certainly been a positive in Jim Harbaugh’s first year.
The Wolverines are going to want to establish the run game early in this contest. Michigan comes in running for better than 202 yards per game this year, last week Maryland gave up better than 300 to West Virginia in a 45-6 blowout loss. Michigan has a couple of very solid backs in De’Veon Smith, Ty Isaac and Derrick Green, plus Drake Johnson has shown flashes of getting back to his normal speed. All four will see touches against the Terrapins, who have given up 200 yards on the ground per game.
Michigan is looking to move to 4-1 with the win and the weather is supposed to be awful. The Wolverine run game will be the difference in this game, coupled with a very good Michigan defense.
