The San Diego Chargers host the Detroit Lions in NFL Football action on Sunday afternoon. The game is scheduled for a 4:05 p.m. start time and it will be televised live on FOX. Currently the NFL Odds for the game have the Chargers favored to pick up the win by a slim margin.
Both San Diego and Detroit are looking to be playoff teams this season. The Lions went 11-5 and played in last year’s post season, they haven’t been to consecutive post seasons since qualifying three years in a row from 1993-95.
Detroit offensively is a solid group. Matthew Stafford throwing the football consistently to Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate accounted for 170 completions, 2,408 yards and 12 touchdowns. The trio will look to once again have a solid game, but playing on the road in San Diego won’t be easy.
The Chargers won’t have to deal with Ndamukong Suh or Nick Fairley up front for Detroit, and they’re playing at home, where they went 5-3 last season. That’s not great news for a Detroit team that hasn’t won a road opener in four seasons.
San Diego quarterback Phillip Rivers threw for 31 scores last year, but also got picked off 18 times. He’s still got a considerable amount of weapons around him and the addition of Melvin Gordon coming out of the backfield should be a positive one for San Diego. The Chargers were horrible in rushing last season, ranking 30th in the league and picking up just 3.4 yards per carry.
Detroit’s defense is expected to take a step back and they’re banged up too. DeAndre Levy isn’t expected to play and he’s been the heart of the Lion defense. Having him miss the game would be tough for the Lions to overcome. Still, if Detroit can protect Stafford in the pocket the Lions are going to score points.
