The Los Angeles Dodgers play host to the Chicago Cubs tonight on Sunday Night Baseball. The game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN. Currently the odds for the game have the Cubs favored to pick up the win on the road.
Both the Dodgers and Cubs are having very successful seasons to this point. Los Angeles should be good with their historic payroll while the Cubs seem to have finally figured it out with Joe Maddon at the helm. This could be a potential look ahead to a post season series between two solid clubs, but there is still a lot of baseball left in the regular season.
Tonight the Cubs give the ball to Jake Arrieta. He's been lights out all season, going 16-6 with a 2.22 ERA in 26 starts. If not for Clayton Kershaw or even Zack Greinke, Arriera would certainly be at the top of the list for National League Cy Young this season. Arrieta has been even more impressive on the road this year, going 10-1 over 14 starts with a 1.94 ERA. He's allowing opponents to hit just .202 and Arrieta has 98 strikeouts in 93 innings on the road. He's been very good for the Cubs and his last loss on the road game on May 7, his only road defeat of the season, to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Opposing him on the mound will be Alex Wood, the Dodgers got him from Atlanta near the trade deadline. Wood is 9-8 with a 3.70 ERA this season in 25 starts, which aren't terrible numbers. He'll look to give the Dodgers a second straight victory in this series, it's only his second start at Dodger Stadium. Wood earned a win in his only other start there this year, beating the Cincinnati Reds while throwing 6 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs.
Current Cubs are hitting a blistering .417 against Wood in just 24 at bats. Very small sample size. Current Dodgers are .264 against Arrieta in 53 at bats, Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez both own home runs and five hits overall against him.
Arrieta and Madison Bumgarner of San Francisco are the only two 16-game winners in baseball to date. Arrieta can obviously take the lead in that category tonight, but the Dodgers are very tough to beat at home. This should be a low scoring affair.
