The San Francisco Giants are hosting the Chicago Cubs tonight in Major League Baseball action. The game is scheduled for an 10:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN. Currently the odds for the game have the Cubs listed as a small favorite to pick up the victory on the road.
Chicago beat up on Matt Cain and the Giants last night, earning an 8-5 victory on the West Coast. The Cubs have been a very nice addition to some of the best teams in the National League this season under skipper Joe Maddon. The usual lovable losers would be playoff bound if the season ended today and they are scoring runs, getting solid pitching and looking like a very good all-around club.
Tonight the Cubs send youngster Kyle Hendricks to the mound. He's 6-5 with a 4.03 ERA on the season and looking to have a nice game tonight. Hendricks is 4-3 away from home this season but has allowed opponents to hit .273 against him while having a 4.44 ERA. Current Giants are hitting .263 against him in 19 at bats, a small sample size. Brandon Belt has hit a home run.
The Giants counter with veteran bulldog Jake Peavy, a 3-6 starter with a 4.35 ERA. Peavy has made just 11 starts this season and has a 2-2 record at home through five starts. Opponents are hitting .286 off him in San Francisco, a number he'd obviously like to improve. Peavy had allowed five walks in 28 1/3 home innings while striking out 14.
Current Cubs own an average of .235 against Peavy in 102 at bats. Only Miguel Montero has homered, he also owns the most success with six hits overall. Starlin Castro has five hits for the Cubs against him as well.
Chicago is playing great, San Francisco appears to be treading water, having lost six of their last 10. The Giants have been very good at home this season, the Cubs are also nine games over .500 on the road. We like runs tonight.
