The Minnesota Twins are on the road this afternoon in matinee Major League Baseball action when they take on the New York Yankees. The game is scheduled for a 1:05 p.m. start time and it will be televised live in both markets. Currently the odds for the game have the Yankees favored to pick up the win in matinee action at home.
Matinee baseball is always fun, especially during the middle of the week. Today the Yankees and Twins take to the field in the final game of their three-game series. Alex Rodriguez continued to write the next chapter in his baseball career Tuesday night, hitting a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning when the Yankees trailed 4-1. Rodriguez is one of baseball's most hated men, but it's hard to argue with the impressive season he's put together for the Pinstripes. Rodriguez hit his 25th career slam in that victory Tuesday.
Today the Yankees will look to sweep the Twins out of town and improve to 6-1 their last seven games overall. The recent stretch has helped them fend off the charging Blue Jays, who are not still a single game behind New York in the AL East. That battle is going to come down to the wire this season, they still play seven more times the rest of the season. Toronto's ability to mash the ball and the improved pitching staff will both be important moving forward, but the Yankees are a very solid offensive team right now as well.
Getting the ball for Minnesota is Ervin Santana. He's 2-3 on the season with a 5.66 ERA in just eight starts. Ironically enough his splits do favor Santana on the road this year, where he is 2-2 but has a decent 3.66 ERA while allowing opponents to hit .231 in 32 combined innings. His numbers at home are considerably worse, most notably the .343 opponent average and the 9.77 ERA. Current Yankees are hitting .230 against him in 196 at bats. Rodriguez has four home runs, four other Yankees have homered against him as well.
The Yankees will send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound. He's been a very nice addition for the Yankees with his 12-2 record. Eovaldi is yet to lose at home this season in 10 starts, but he has only factored into four decisions. His 3.41 ERA and .260 average for opponents in 58 innings of work has been able to hold up for the Yankees this year, he's been able to avoid the big disasters and be consistent. Current Twins are hitting .231 against him in 39 at bats. Brian Dozier and Aaron Hicks each have two base hits against him, no one on Minnesota has homered.
New York's home record is considerably better than Minnesota's on the road. With Eovaldi's success there and after an emotional win on Tuesday, look for the Yankees to win again.
