NFL Preseason New York Jets at Detroit Lions Start Time, Odds, Free Pick

The New York Jets and Detroit Lions hit the field tonight in preseason NFL Football action. The game is scheduled for an 7:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised live in both markets. The Lions are favored by about a field goal in this one to pick up the win at home.

The Lions and Jets are one of a handful of preseason NFL games being played tonight. The Lions made major steps forward last year under the first-year direction of Jim Caldwell. In 2014 Detroit finished the regular season with an 11-5 record, winning four of their last five games overall and qualifying for the playoffs, where they lost in the Wild Card matchup to the Dallas Cowboys.

This year the Lions are looking to get back to the playoffs, but they're in a tough division in the NFC North where the Green Bay Packers might be the best team in the conference and the Minnesota Vikings are expected to be considerably better.

The New York Jets have significant problems as expected starting quarterback Geno Smith had his jaw broken for what appears to be a $600 plane ticket. That certainly seems like a very Jets problem, but it's possible they are a better team without him. Reports indicate Ryan Fitzpatrick and rookie Bryce Petty should battle for the job in this matchup against the Lions, although Fitzpatrick brings a very veteran presence and experience with him from multiple starting jobs in his past.

In the first official game for Todd Bowles as a head coach, he's got some problems to fix already. Look for the Lions depth to be a difference in this one.

Movie Oakland Raiders: 2015 NFL Free Picks & Betting Odds

Vegas betting expert Steve Fezzik doesn’t expect the bad situation in Oakland to get much better this season. This AFC West team may have some improvements in terms of personnel, but Jack Del Rio is the latest in a carousel of ever-changing mediocre coaches, and Fezzik doesn’t expect he is the guy to turn this team around. He also thinks people are overstating Derek Carr’s abilities at quarterback, as he may do well in the fourth quarter, but his numbers are padded with garbage time performance.
