140th Preakness Stakes Longshot Odds: Divining Rod

On Saturday the 2015 Preakness Stakes takes center stage on the sports world. There are only going to be eight horses in this year's event and one of the Preakness Stakes Longshots this year is Divining Rod. Currently the race has Divining Rod Odds listed at 18-1 (morning line 12-1) to win the second leg of the Triple Crown.

One of just eight horses to be entered into this year's Preakness Stakes, Divining Line drew the seventh position in the race.

Divining Rod isn't one of the Bob Baffert horses, but that can't make it a contender in this race. The horse has the necessary points to qualify for the Kentucky Derby, but owners decided to save it for the Preakness. A winner this year already at the Coolmore Lexington Stakes, a G3 race at Keeneland, Divining Rod has the look of a potential upset contender.

Preakness Facts: Opening day at Pimlico Race Course in 1870 featured the Dinner Party Stakes that was won by a horse named Preakness. In the racetrack's spring meet of 1873, the 3-year-old stakes race was named after him and the rest is history. The first official Preakness was won by Survivor with a 10 length cushion between him and second place. This record win was not topped until 2004 when Smarty Jones took home the title by an amazing 11 lengths.

Triple Crown Winners (Official List): Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977) and Affirmed (1978).

Movie The Preakness is Beatable and Bettable--Buy/Sell?

Teddy Covers and Steve Fezzik, professional bettors, discuss whether or not casual horse handicappers can win betting the Triple Crown races like the upcoming Preakness. Fezzik sees some value in betting the horse to horse individual match-ups, but doesn't think it is worth betting on the race as a whole. Teddy Covers takes some advice from Pregame's horse racing capper JR O'Donnell who pointed out that every time trainer Bob Baffret takes a Derby-winning horse to Preakness he wins, which is exactly what he is doing with his contender, the favorite American Pharoah.
