The 141st run for the roses is takes place this Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The Kentucky Derby official start time is 6:24 pm ET. There are several Longshots in the event, including War Story, who has been installed as 50/1 Odds to win the Derby.

War Story's Record: 2-2-1 in 5 Races. Trainer: Thomas Amoss. Jockey: Joe Talamo Sire: Northern Afleet. Dam: Belle Watling. Best Beyer Speed: 91

War Story drew the 16th slot in the gate and has been trained by Thomas Amoss, who has compiled 3128 wins in his career, including 45 this year. Thomas has not had success in any Triple Crown race with his best finish being 3rd at the Preakness States (Mylute 2013). Thomas has been very consistent in his career as he has ranked 41st or better in earnings every year since 2000 and 31st or better in wins over that same stretch. He has won the Apple Blossom (G1), Go for Wand Handicap (G1), and Lecomte Stakes (G3). 

Riding War Story will be Joe Talamo, who comes in with 1540 career wins, which includes 27 this year. In 2006, Talamo won his first race at Louisiana Downs, and later became the first apprentice to win the Fair Grounds riding title during the 2006-2007 racing meet. He also won the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in 2007 and won his first Breeders' Cup race in 2009 aboard California Flag in the Turf Sprint. Talamo was aboard Sidney’s Candy in the 2010 Kentucky Derby and finished 17th in that race.

War Story is not expected to do much here. He is a solid closer, but has problems getting started and that means he is off the pace very early in races. He can't do that here and expect to win, even with good closing speed. Neither trainer nor Jockey have had god success in the derby and I don't see that changing here as War Story should finish in the back of the pack.
