Materiality has drawn the 3rd slot in the gate. He is trained under Todd Pletcher, who did win the Kentucky Derby with Super Saver back in 2010. Pletcher ranks second by Kentucky Derby starters with 40, trailing only living-legend D. Wayne Lukas and he has five horses in this race. Pletcher has won 7 Eclipse Awards (Top Trainer) and has been the top money winner by conditioner 9 times since 2004. This year he is ranked 4th in wins by a trainer with 74 and overall in his career he has 3373 wins overall in his career.
Materiality will be ridden by Javier Castellano, who has compiled 4073 wins in his career, including 125 this year, which ranks first for 2015. Despite all his win he has just one Triple crown win and that was in the Preakness Stakes back in 2006. He has won the Eclipse award for Outstanding Jockey the last two years and did win the Breeder's Cup n 2004, while riding Ghostzapper. Other top horses include Union Rags, Stay Thirsty, Hilda's Passion, Red Rocks, and Telling.
Materiality might be a horse to watch here as he has very good speed and has won all 3 of his races so far. He does have one thing going against him and that is the fact the he didn't race at all in 2014 and no horse since Apollo in 1882 has ever won the derby without racing as a 2 year old. Let's also note that Pletcher has not had great success in the derby. Still I give materiality a good chance to push American Pharoah and Dortmund in this one, but he will not win it.
