The Michigan State Spartans take on the Maryland Terrapins today in the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals. The game is scheduled for a 3:25 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on CBS. Currently the College Basketball Betting Odds for the game have the Spartans favored to make the title game with the win.

Michigan State looked solid on both ends of the floor yesterday in a quarterfinal win over Ohio State. The Spartans shot 47.5 percent from the floor and got 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists from Denzel Valentine in the victory. Travis Trice and Branden Dawson both had double digits as well as Sparty once again reached the Big Ten semis.

Maryland, in the first year in the conference, has exceeded expectations. The Terps finished second overall in the league, won 27 games so far and has not lost since a Feb. 8 defeat at Iowa, a span of eight games.

Today they’re an underdog because Tom Izzo is considered to be a better coach and Michigan State has been in this situation before. While the Spartans have a lot of talent on the team, they also do all the little things necessary to win this time of year. Izzo teams always play well in March and once again Michigan State has a shot at a Big Ten Tournament title.

Don’t overlook Maryland, though. Melo Trimble has proven to be a legitimate point guard in the conference and Dez Wells has powered his team to this point, scoring points, rebounding the ball and bringing energy.

Jay Layman also averages in double digits for the Terps and the three are the primary point finders. Michigan State defensively probably won’t look to shut down all three because that seems like a tough task to complete. Slowing down one, or possibly two, can help Sparty win.

This should be a great game between two schools that can make some noise in the NCAA Tournament. Maryland is the underdog, but look for the upset here.
