The 21st-ranked SMU Mustangs are on the road tonight when they take on the Memphis Tigers in American Conference Basketball action. The game is scheduled for a 9:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Currently the College Basketball Betting Odds for the game have SMU favored by a slim margin on the road.
SMU has been a better-than-average road team this season, winning seven of their 10 games away from home. The Mustangs are winners in four straight games overall and take on a Memphis team that has currently won three straight games themselves. For the year Memphis owns a 12-4 record in home games.
Marcus Kennedy scored 21 points off the bench in the first matchup between these two teams, an SMU win at home. The Mustangs finished with three starters in double figures in that game, but Nic Moore was not one of them. The junior guard has played very well recently, scoring double digits in each of the last four games while averaging five assists in those games — all wins for SMU. The Mustangs started the season with a 2-3 record, but since then have posted a record of 19-2.
Memphis is still fighting for a chance at the NCAA Tournament, but it doesn't look good. The Tigers don't have a single Top 50 RPI win on the season and have an 0-7 record against those teams so far. The Tigers are led in scoring by Austin Nichols and his 13.7 points per game, but he's the only player averaging more than nine points per game.
The 68 points or so per game by Memphis have caused them to be in several close games this year, but in the recent win streak Memphis has scored 75 points in all three games. If the Tigers are running the floor and the defense is solid, the Tigers are going to hang around in games.
Playing at home will be good for them in this one. The defense for Memphis is not bad, but SMU has a better overall defensive club. Both teams give up less than 62 points per game. Tonight's battle will be in the low-60s and the team that can knock down perimeter shots gets it done tonight.
