One of the rivalry games in college football action today will see the Virginia Cavaliers take on the Virginia Tech Hokies. The game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN. Currently the odds for the game have this one listed as a close one by the experts.
Neither Virginia Tech or Virginia have been very good this season. Both are 5-6 on the year and have a combined five wins in the ACC compared to nine losses. Virginia Tech looked like they could have a special season early on, walking into Columbus and pulling out a huge win over the Buckeyes. Virginia Tech also beat Duke just a few weeks ago, a contest that was also on the road. Yet, despite those two good victories this year Virginia Tech has to pick up a win in this game tonight over Virginia or they'll finish the season below .500 and miss a bowl game.
Virginia picked up a big win themselves last week, knocking off the Miami Hurricanes 30-13 which gives them a chance to make a bowl game with a win over the Hokies. Neither one of these teams score a lot of points on average this season, which could make the offenses tonight work a bit harder.
Defensively, though, Virginia and Virginia Tech are both tough squads. The Hokies give up an average of just 20.5 points per game this year while the Cavaliers surrender 24 points per game. Scoring will be at a premium tonight and with defenses getting stops consistently, the team that can put some points on the board will certainly have an advantage.
Tonight, Michael Brewer will be the difference in the game. The QB for the Hokies is going to lead them to a victory and make them bowl eligible. The oddsmakers have made this a probable close contest but look for the Hokies to pick up the win.
