College football week 5 and the North Carolina Tar Heels will travel to Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida to take on the Miami Hurricanes. The game has a start time of 12:30 pm (Eastern) and will be televised on the ACC Network. Current Vegas odds have the Hurricanes listed as 15 point favorites, while the total is set at 68.5.
Analysis: The North Carolina Tar Heels come in having won 2 in a row to even their season record at 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the ACC. The Heels did make a nice comeback last week in their 28-27 win over Virginia. The Tar Heels are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games following an ATS win and the Underdog is 8-1-1 ATS in their last 10 meetings, but the Heels are also 5-12 ATS in their last 17 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. North Carolina is a very solid offensive team that ranks 46th in total yards, 21st in passing, 86th in rushing and 20th in scoring (37.4 ppg). Defensively they have been horrendous, ranking 123rd in yards allowed, 119th vs the pass, 108th vs the run and 125th in points allowed (41.2 ppg).
The Miami Hurricanes come in was a decent 5-3 record overall that includes a 4-0 mark at home and a 2-2 record in the ACC. Miami has won 2 in a row, including a 21 point home win over Cincinnati and a 24 point road win over Virginia Tech last week on Thursday night. Miami is 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games following a SU win of more than 20 points and 11-5 ATS in their last 16 home games, but are also 3-8 ATS in their last 11 conference games. Miami has been an average offensive team, ranking 54th in total yards, 59th in passing, 47th in rushing and 56th in scoring (31.2 ppg). Defensively they are very solid, ranking 15th in yards allowed, 9th vs the pass, 50th vs the run and 35th in points allowed (22.1 ppg).
Pick: I will be looking at the dog in this one. This is just too many points for a mediocre Miami team to be giving a North Carolina squad that can score on anyone in the country. North Carolina can’t stop many people, but I see them coming up with enough stops here to keep this one from turning into a rout. The Dog is 8-1 ATS the last 9 in the series, while Miami is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 vs the ACC. Miami by no more than 10 here.
