Week 5 of the 2014 season continues today as the St Louis Rams travel to Lincoln Financial Field take on the Philadelphia Eagles. The game has a start time of 1:00 pm (Eastern) and will be televised on FOX. Current Vegas odds have the Eagles listed as 6.5 point favorites, while the total is set at 47.5.
Analysis: The St Louis Rams have started the year at 1-2 on the year, going 1-0 on the road and 0-2 at home. They did lose QB Sam Bradford and then Shaun Hill went down as well. Now the offense is in the hands of Austin Davis, who will remain the starter even when Hill is available to play. So far this year Davis has hit 72.3% of his passes for 754 yards, with 3 TDs and 3 INTs. Austin could use some help from Zac Stacy, who has run for just 181 yards this year so far. The Rams come in 9th in the league in total offense, 9th in passing offense, but they only have scored 18.7 ppg, which is 27th in the league, while on defense they are 12th overall, 3rd vs the pass and 30th in points allowed (28.3 ppg). The Rams are 1-9-1 ATS in their last 11 in this series and 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games here, plus 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games before playing on MNF, but we also note that they are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS loss.
The Eagles come in at 3-1 and are looking to bounceback back from a horrible showing out in San Francisco last week. The Eagles did score 21 points in that game, but none came from their offense in the 26-21 loss to the Niners. Lesean McCoy is the star of the offense, but has not really gotten on track this year as he has rushed for just 192 yards to go with just 64 receiving yards, while having just 1 total TD on the year so far. He may be able to get going vs a St Louis run defense that has not been very good this year. Nick Foles has not had a great start this year, as he has hit just 58% of his passes for 1173 yards with 6 TDs and 4 INTs so far. Remember he threw just 2 INTs all of last year. The Eagles are 10th in total offense, 3rd in passing and 3rd in scoring (30.5 ppg), while on defense they are 27th overall and 25th in points allowed (26 ppg). The Eagles are 0-6 ATS before playing the Giants.
Pick: I will look to the over in this one. The Eagles offense had some issues last week and LeSean McCoy has had some problems getting going this year. That should change here vs a porous Rams run defense. It is important for the Eagles to get their running game going as it opens up the rest of the offense and that should happen in this one. The Rams are 30th in points allowed this year at 28.3 ppg and the Eagles should put up 30+ here on them, especially coming of that horrible offensive showing in San Francisco last week. The Eagle defense is nothing special as they come in 27th overall and have allowed 26 ppg on the year. Behind Austin Davis it looks as if the Rams have a decent passing game to work with and they will need to throw allot here if they hope to keep pace with the Eagles high flying attack. These teams have combined to allow 54.3 ppg this year and we also note that teams that have a divisional home game on Monday night on deck have gone 11-0 to the Over if the OU line is more than 41. Points aplenty in the City of Brotherly Love.
