Analysis: The Jacksonville Jaguars come in off another poor year, in which they went just 4-12 and gthis year hasn’t started out much better as they are currently 0-3 on the year and have been outscored in their last 2 games by a combined 85-17 count. Last year the Jags were last in the league in scoring, at 15.4 ppg, while also ranking 31st in total yards (293.8 ypg), 22nd in passing (215.1 ypg) and 31st in rushing (78.8 ypg). Blake Bortles was taken with the third overall pick in the draft and is slated to start this game. Toby Gerhart was brought in to be the feature back, but he only has had 86 carries the last 2 years behind Adrian Petersen in Minnesota (Vikings probably wished they had him now). Defensively, the Jags ranked 28th in points allowed (28.1 ppg), 27th in yards allowed (379.4 ypg), 25th vs the pass (247.6 ypg) and 29th vs the run (131.8 ypg). This year they are again bad on both sides of the ball as they rank 30 th in scoring (14.7 ppg) and 32 nd in points allowed (39.7 ppg).
The San Diego Chargers surprised many last year by going 9-7 on the year and making it to the 2nd round of the NFL playoffs, before bowing out to Denver. This year they started out on the wrong foot with an 18-17 loss to Arizona in the desert, but have bounced back strong with a 3021 win over the defending Super Bowl champs, Seattle and then last week they went into buffalo and came away with a 22-10 win. Philip Rivers had a very nice bounce back year, last year, under the guidance of Mike McCoy, who fixed some of Philips mechanics, while also giving him more freedom at the line of scrimmage and they come in ranking 12 th in the league in passing (254.7 ypg).The Chargers do need their running game to step up and that task has been made more difficult now that Ryan Mathews is out for a few weeks, while Danny Woodhead has been lost for the season. The defense for the Bolts has been solid, as they have allowed just 16.3 ppg through 3 games.
Pick: In this game I will look to the Over. I know shocker right? Well the Chargers have played a couple of big games in a row and their defense has played very well, but still they may be playing over their heads a bit on that side of the ball and they will be facing Blake Bortles, who they have no film on. For the Chargers on offense they have put up 17 and 22 points on the road, but 30 at home vs a very tough Seattle defense. Now they take on the worst defense the league and a team that has allowed 40+ points in each of their last 2 games. The Chargers have become a dink and dunk offense but they figure to air it out here a bit more vs this defense, especially with their top 2 RBs out for this game. I expect the Jags to throw allot with Bortles under center, while the Chargers will put it up plenty here as well. I see a 31-17 type game in this one.
