The Detroit Lions head to take on the New York Jets in NFL football action Sunday. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time and it will be televised live on FOX. Currently the odds for the game have the Lions favored by a slim margin on the road.
The Lions played very well last week at home, knocking off the Green Bay Packers. Now they hit the road to take on a New York Jets team that played pretty solid against both those Packers and the Chicago Bears on Monday night. Detroit is a high-flying offense that boasts a big-armed quarterback in Mattew Stafford and the best receiver in football with Calvin Johnson. Yet Detroit has also done a pretty solid job of running the football effectively this season. While they haven't put up big numbers on the ground average-wise, they have gotten good work from both Reggie Bush and Joique Bell.
This game will see the Jets strength (defense) against a Lions team that has no problems doing big things on offense. Neither team has done well in the turnover department this season, both sitting below even in that category.
Detroit's defense has been very good this season. They sacked Aaron Rodgers twice last week and had six total tackles for loss. The Lions rank third in the league defensively by allowing opponents to throw for an average of less than 181 yards per game. They're even better against the run this year, ranking second best in the league as opponents rush for less than 64 yards per game.
The Jets want to run the ball and establish a solid ground game. Detroit wants to get out and chuck it around the yard. Both could get what they want offensively, but Detroit should be able to benefit more from their advantage. The Jets secondary is just not good from a health standpoint or effective standpoint. The Bears chewed them up for big yardage last week, catching 23 passes from Cutler for 225 yards. The Lions have the ability to match Chicago's offensive output and will look to copy the Bears blueprint of success against the Jets.
Detroit hasn't been great on the road in the past and they are very good at home. They're favored to beat the Jets in this one, but there should be some caution here as Detroit still hasn't taken that next step to being an elite team in the NFL. Once the Lions start consistently winning on the road they'll be one of the better teams in the NFL.
Today we like the Lions offense to make too many plays.
