Saturday college football and we will see the Notre Dame Fighting Irish take on the Syracuse Orange at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The game has a start time of 8:00 pm (Eastern) and will be televised on ABC. Current Vegas odds have the Fighting Irish listed as 8.5 point favorites, while the total is set at 51.5.
Analysis: The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have gone 37-15 in Brian Kelly’s first 4 years here and did make it to the National Title game in 2012, but Irish fans are hungry for more, especially since their team hasn’t won a National Title since 1988. The Irish lost some key pieces from last year’s 9 -4 squad, but this still is a very talented team that could put up double digits in wins this year. Notre Dame is off to a solid 3-0 start, which includes a 31-0 win over Michigan a few weeks ago. After the Michigan game the Irish did struggle to beat Purdue at home, but should be ready for this one with a week off to get ready for it. Offensively the Irish have been solid this year as thety have put up 36.3 ppg, while on defense they have allowed just 10.3 ppg, which is 4th in the nation.
The Syracuse Orange had a nice 7-6 season last year, which ended with a 21-17 win over Minnesota in the Texas Bowl. The Orange are now in the second year of Shafer’s systems and have plenty of returning talent to make a run at a 3rd straight bowl game. The Orange come in at 2-1 on the year, but have to really be kicking themselves after outgaining the Maryland Terrapins last week by 220 yards, yet losing the game by 14. It was a a game the Cuse should have won. Their offense has been solid this year as they rank 51st in the nation in total offense (457.7 ypg) and 79th in scoring (29 ppg), while on defense that come in ranked 28th in the nation in yards allowed (325 ypg) and 41st in points allowed (21 ppg)
Pick: I will go with the Irish in this one. Notre Dame is quietly having a solid season and with this game on a neutral site it should not help a much improved Syracuse team. The line has come down big time here, but I do expect Notre Dame to come away with a double digit win in this one.
