College football week 5 and the Baylor Bears will travel to Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa to take on the Iowa State Cyclones. The game has a start time of 8:00 pm (Eastern) and will be televised on FOX. Current Vegas odds have the Bears listed as 21 point favorites, while the total is set at 71.
Analysis: The Baylor Bears have been on a roll of late, especially last year, in which they went 11-2 on the year, which securing a berth in the Fiesta Bowl. They lost that game but this team is loaded once again and ready to make a run at joining the new NCAA playoff system. The Bears are off to a nice 3-0 start this year, but really haven't played a tough schedule as hey have faced SMU, Northwestern State and Buffalo so far this year. Still the Bears have used those three games to put up some nice offensive numbers as they come in ranked tops in the nation in total offense (654.3 ypg), 3rd in passing (416 ypg) and 1st in scoring (59.3 ppg). They have also been solid on defense, ranking 3rd in yards allowed (221 ypg) and 2nd in scoring (9.0 ppg).
The Iowa State Cyclones went to bowl games in 2012 and 2012, but last year it all came crashing down with a 3-9 record overall and a 1-7 mark in the Big 12. This year the Cyclones look improved, with 15 starters back and some solid Jucos coming in, but will it be enough to get them back to a bowl game? The Cyclones are not off to a good start to get back to a bowl game, as they are just 1-2 out of the gate, but their lone win on the year was at Iowa. The Cyclones have really struggled on offense this year as they are 115th in total yards (303 ypg) and 107th in scoring (20.7 ppg). The defense has been below average as they are 86th in yards allowed (417.3 ypg) and 87th in points allowed (27.7 ppg).
Pick: I know that Baylor has been dominant so far this year, but i just don't see them blowing out this Iowa State squad that plays tough at home and has pulled a few shockers here as well. We also note that you should PLAY ON any home dog or favorite of less than 16 points in Game Four of the season if they are playing with rest and revenge off a SU win. Teams are 26-4 in that spot since 1980. Baylor will get their points here, but Iowa State should keep pace with them and keep this game around 2 TDs worst.
