NFL Thursday Night New York Giants vs Washington Redskins Odds, Free Pick

NFL Week 5 kicks off tonight and we get a matchup between the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins in Landover, Maryland. The game has a start time of 8:25 pm (Eastern) and will be televised on CBS. Current Vegas odds have the Redskins listed as 3.5 point favorites, while the total is set at 46.

Analysis: It has been a bad start to the year for the NY Giants as they come in at 1-2, but they just played their best game of the young season in their 30-17 win over the Houston Texans. In that game the Giants finally had a solid offensive showing, especially Eli Manning, who hit 21 of 28 passes for 226 yards with 2 TDs and zero INTs. That was big for Eli as he had thrown 4 INTs in the first 2 games. Another plus was their run game that totaled 193 yards on the ground vs the Texans, after putting up just 134 total yards on the ground in their first 2 games. The Giants come in ranked 26th in the league in total offense (319 ypg) and 25th in scoring (19.3 ppg), while on defense they rank 23rd in yards allowed (364.7 ypg) and 25th in points allowed (25.7 ppg).

The Washington Redskins also come into this game with a 1-2 mark. The Skins started with a poor performance vs Texans in a 17-6 season opener loss, but then bounced back the following week with a 41-10 win over the Jaguars. In that game they had lost RG# to an injury, but Kirk Cousins came in and ignited the team and may have won the QB job for the rest of the year. We shall see. The Skins played a very good game vs the Eagles but came up just a bit short in the 37-34 loss. The Skins didn’t run the ball all that well, but Kirk Cousins had another solid game as he hit 30 of 48 passes for 427 yards, with 3 TDs and just 1 INT. The Skins also had a nearly 9 min advantage in TOP as well. Desean Jackson made his return back to Philly and had a nice game catching 5 passes for 117 yards and 1 TD. Offensively the Skins are ranked 4th in the league in total offense (444 ypg), 3rd in passing (308.7 ypg) and 5th in scoring (27 ppg).

Pick: This is normally a tightly contested low scoring game and that is why I will go with the Under here. The Under is 5-0 the last 5 meting and 8 of the last 10 in this series has put up 42 points or less. The Skins were in a shootout with the Eagles last week, but that is not their game. I know they can throw better with Cousins behind center, but this is still a team that is bet when they run the ball and they will have to control the clock to take some pressure off that banged up defense. The Giants go their offense in gear last week and that was because they ran the ball and I will look for them to do that here as well, which will help eat clock, plus will also help to really wear down a Washington defense that is a bit depleted anyway. A couple of teams that should run more than throw and that will keep the clock moving and the scoring down, in what has been a low scoring series between these teams.
