The Green Bay Packers welcome in the New York Jets today in NFL football action. The game is scheduled for a 4:25 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on CBS. Currently the odds for the game have the Packers favored by more than a touchdown in this one.
Green Bay dropped their opening game of the year on Thursday night in Seattle. They're looking for a bounce back in this contest against the Jets, which won last week in their opening game against Oakland. The Jets are going to be out-gunned in this one if the Packers an score points and play well on offense. With Aaron Rodgers running the show Green Bay is one of the best teams in the league and playing at home is going to make them look even better.
But could this be a spot where the Packers just go through the motions and not take care of business? Green Bay has back-to-back road games against both Detroit and Chicago the next couple of weeks. The Jets aren't that important in the grand scheme of things to the Packers' season, so how up for this game will they be? Certainly getting a win is the most important thing and beating the Jets is something they can accomplish.
As a home favorite last year the Packers were just 3-4, also going 3-4 against the number off a loss as well. But when Rodgers was playing the Packers have covered 14 of 18 games. The New York secondary is banged up and they have some depth issues there as well. A healthy Green Bay offense should be able to move the football against them and score points.
Geno Smith has a 5/13 touchdown-to-interception ratio in road games for the Jets. He was sacked 28 times the final seven games on the road as well. The Jets have problems in pass coverage and that's not good facing a Packers defense that has ranked third and eighth in the sacks the past couple of years. The Packers have had their troubles on defense the past few years but it hasn't been because they couldn't get to the quarterback.
New York added Chris Johnson at the running back position, which gives them options in being balanced. They won't be able to continually rely on Smith in the passing game because he just isn't good enough yet. Being able to run the football helps. New York had the most rushing yards of any team in the league last week, collecting 212 yards on the ground, with Chris Ivory and Johnson combining for 23 carries and 170 yards.
Penalty wise, however, the Jets were awful last week. They were flagged 11 times for 105 yards last week and will probably have some procedure penalties today. Lambeau Field can get rowdy and loud, especially when the Packers are playing well.
In this one, look for Rodgers to have a big game. The Jets surrendered only 133 yards through the air last week and only 25 yards on the ground to the Raiders — just horrendous numbers for Oakland. That has made the Jets the top overall defense so far through one week, but that won't last long.
