Analysis: The Purdue Boilermakers come in off an embarrassing home loss to the Central Michigan Chippewas. The loss has Purdue at 1-1 on the year, but even in their 43-34 win over Western Michigan they didn’t play all that well as they were outgained by 49 yards in the contest. Vs CMU, the Boilermakers were able to put up just 323 yards of total offense, including just 204 through the air. Danny Etling could be a solid QB, but just doesn’t have solid skill players to work with and that OL is terrible as well. For the year Danny has completed just 51.4% of his passes for 304 yards, with 2 TDs and 2 INts. Numbers like that won’t get it done in this game vs a tough Irish defense. Overall the Boilermakers are 98th in total offense (366.5 ypg) and 73rd in scoring (30 ppg), while on defense they are 77th in yards allowed (394.5 ypg) and 110th in points allowed (36 ppg).
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish come in with a 2-0 mark that includes a 31 point win over Rice and a 31-0 shutout of the Michigan Wolverines last week. Obviously the Irish defense played well in that game, as they allowed just 289 total yards, including just 100 yards on the ground, while also grabbing 4 TOs in the game. The Irish offense was not all that great, as they put up just 280 yards in the game, but Everett Golson did have a solid game, hitting 23 of 34 passes for 3 TDs and zero INTs. Golson is off to a great start this year after missing last year due to an academic suspension, as he has hit 66.1% of his passes for 521 yards and 5 TDs with zero INTs, while also rushing for 3 more TDs. Golson has yet to lose a regular season game in his career as he is 14-0 in those games. The Irish come in ranked 73rd in total offense (428 ypg) and 35th in scoring (39.5 ppg), while on defense they rank 50th in yards allowed (328 ypg) and 9 th in points allowed (8.5 ypg).
Pick: Consistency is something the Brian Kelley is looking for his year and coming off a 31-0 win over Michigan, the last thing he wants is a lackluster performance vs Purdue. If a fully focused Irish squad can beat Michigan by 31, then they should be able to do at least the same to this bad Purdue squad that just lost by 21 at home last week to Central Michigan. The Irish have huge edges on both sides of the ball and should win this game very easily.
