Week 3 college football and the Northern Illinois Huskies will travel to Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada to take on the UNLV Rebels. The game has a start time of 7:00 pm (Eastern) and will be televised on the Mountain West Network. Current Vegas odds have the Huskies listed as 10 point favorites, while the total is set at 55.5.
Analysis: The Northern Illinois Huskies come in off a nice 23-15 win on the road vs Northwestern out of the Big 10. The Huskies were able to put 401 yards of total offense, including 221 on the ground vs the Wildcats. Akeem Daniels had 81 yards rushing in the game and leads the team in rushing for the year with 199 yards, but has yet to score a TD. 3 QBs played vs the Cats with Drew Hare having the better day, hitting 6 of 10 passes for 109 yards, while also rushing for 31 yards and a score. Not Jordan Lynch numbers for sure. The defense for the Huskies allowed 322 yards through the air vs the Wildcats, but they were stout vs the run, allowing just 72 yards on 37 carries (1.9 ypc). The huskies are ranked 23rd in total offense (518 ypg), 13th in rushing 322.5 ypg) and 37th in scoring (39 ppg). On defense they are 14th overall (260.5 ypg) and 10th in scoring (9 ppg).
The UNLV Rebels may be in store for a long year after what is really a slow start. Yes they are 1-1, but the loss was by 45 points to Arizona State, while the win was by just 1 point over FCS foe Northern Colorado, in a game that the Rebels were 4 TD favorites in. In the win vs Northern Colorado, the Rebels were only able to outgain them by 5 yards, which is not good vs a lower level FCS foe. Blake Decker hit 11 of 18 passes for just 121 yards in the game. He did have a TD pass, but also threw 3 INTs. So far now he has tossed 4 INTs on the year. The running game was solid with 211 yards and was led by George NauFahu, who had 90 yards on 22 carries. For the year UNLV is 101st in total offense (351.5 ypg) and 123rd in scoring (13 ppg), while on defense they have been bad, ranking 121st in yards allowed (557 ypg) and 107th in points allowed (35 ppg).
Pick: Gonna love to the Under here. The Huskies lost allot of offense from last year and will be a bit more pedestrian this year. Last week they were able to score just 23 points vs a mediocre Northwestern defense and now they travel cross country to play in 90+ degree weather. The defense for the Huskies is very good this year, while the Rebels have yet to score more than 13 points in a game. Very hard to see this game hitting 50 points at all.
