The Mississippi State Bulldogs open their 2014 college football season when they host the Southern Mississippi State Golden Eagles tonight. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on the SEC Network. Currently the odds for the game have the Bulldogs as a massive favorite in this one.

This game shouldn't be close. Southern Miss has been one of the worst teams in college football recently and Mississippi State has been getting better under head coach Dan Mullen. The Bulldogs probably aren't going to compete for an SEC championship this season, but they should clean up against teams like Southern Miss, especially at home. Under Mullen, the Bulldogs have gone 4-1 against the number in home openers.
Believe it or not, Southern Miss actually has won 10 of the last 14 games in battle between the two schools, but they haven't played since 1990. They are, however, just 1-11 in road openers the last dozen years. They've also lost their last nine straight by an average of three touchdowns.
Southern Miss did hold a streak of 23 straight games lost until they knocked off UAB in last year's season finale. With SEC matchups against both Mississippi State and Alabama on the road this season, we don't anticipate the Golden Eagles putting together a winning streak.
Mississippi State will be bigger, faster and much better overall. This game shouldn't be close, but the Bulldogs might put it in cruise control during the second half. The first two quarters, however, will see them going wide open. Look for the blowout here as Southern Miss has done nothing to improve their football program.
