2014 Stanford Cardinal Football Schedule, Preview

What a for year run it has been for the Stanford Cardinal, as they have gone 46-8 over that span, while going to 4 straight BCS bowls and have captured 2 straight Pac-12 Titles in a row. The recent success has really helped in recruiting, as the Cardinal, brings back just 12 starters this year, but will still be a dangerous team in the Pac-12. Schedule & preview below.

QB Kevin Hogan returns and is 16-3 as a starter overall, including a 10-1 mark vs ranked teams. He is not a great QB, but he manages the game well and doesn’t make many crucial mistakes. The biggest loss on the offense will be that of RB Tyler Gaffney, who ran for 1709 yards and 21 TDs last year. This RB group though is very deep, including Barry Sanders (#8 Coming out of High School) Remound Wright (#25) and Christian McCaffery (#14), who all were highly touted. s (#8 Coming out of High School) Remound Wright (#25) and Christian McCaffery (#14), who all were highly touted and will all get a shot at significant carries this year. The OL will be solid, but will also go through some growing pains early as just 2 of 5 starters are back. The WR/TE group looks to be a strength as the top 5 from last year are back.  The Cardinal allowed just 19 ppg last year and look to be slightly better this time around with 7 starters back. They will miss Shayne Skov, who had 13 TFL last year, but still this defense is very experienced, with just juniors and seniors in the starting lineup, plus they have the #6 DL coming in (Solomon Thomas) and two LBs (Joey Alfieri & Bobby Okereke), who were both rated in the top 30 coming out of high school.

The Cardinal lost some key parts on offense, but the RB corps may be deeper than last year and the OL should still be solid, while Hogan will continue to manage games efficiently.  This offense will still produce around 30 ppg. The defense is very experienced and with the signees they had in the offseason, they are now a very deep defense and should be better than last year’s group that allowed 19 ppg. The Schedule though is very tough, with road dates at Washington, Notre Dame, Arizona State, UCLA and Oregon, so winning a 3rd straight Pac-12 Title is highly unlikely, but they should at least bag another 9 wins and a solid bowl invite. KEY TREND: 9-0 ATS before playing Oregon State.
