Mike Riley is now 88-73 in his 13 years at the helm of the Oregon State Beavers, while also going 6-2 in bowl games after last year’s 15 point win over Boise State in the Hawaii bowl. The best news coming out of Corvallis was that Sean Mannion will be returning for his senior season. Sean threw for 37 TDs and 15 INTs last year, but now for some bad news for him. Top wideout Brandin Cooks is off to the NFL, after leading the nation with 1730 yards receiving. That leaves the WR corps very this as just 1 player with more than 7 catches returns. They do have a couple of solid TEs in Connor Hamlett and Caleb Smith, who combined for 65 receptions and 9 TDs last year, but little proven talent at the WR spot. The running game has a nice 1-2 tandem of Terron ward and Storm Woods, who combined 998 yards and 11 TDs last year, while the OL has just 2 starters back and little depth. The defense has 7 starters back, after allowing 31.4 ppg, which was 11 ppg more then they allowed in 2012. The DL is rated near the bottom of the Pac-12 and will struggle this with just 2 starters back and little depth. The LB corps will get a boost with the return of Michael Doctor, who was lost after 2 games last year. In 24 starts in his career he has 172 tackles, including 15 TFLs. This LB overall is very solid and so is the secondary, with 2 of the team’s top 3 tacklers residing there.
The Beavers offense should be good, but may not put up the numbers that they have been used to, especially with a weak OL and a WR corps with little proven talent. The back 7 is very strong for the Beavers, but they have major issues on the DL and after allowing 5.1 ypc last year, they really need the line to step up. Overall this is a solid team and should get another bowl invite this year, thanks to a schedule that is mediocre at best. Still they may be another year away from contending for the Pac-12 South title. KEY TREND: 12-1 ATS of back-to-back SU & ATS losses.
