The California Golden Bears suffered through an injury filled 1-11 first season under new HC Sonny Dykes. Now in his second season they have 15 starters and 50 lettermen back, and while they will be an improved team, a tough schedule may not all the results to show up much in the standing. Preview & schedule below.
Jared Goff had a great year in 2013, throwing for 3508 yards with 18 TDs and 10 INTs and with a year under his belt he looks to be better this time around. Jared has plenty of weapons to throw to, with 4 players back that caught at least 25 passes, including Chris Harper and Bryce Teggs, who combined for 147 receptions last year. The running game is set with Muhammad and David Lasco, who was injured for much of the year, plus they have added Tre Watson, who ran for 48 TDs as a high school senior. The OL has 3 starters back and 73 career starts, plus they have added some depth as well. This should be an improved group over last year. The Defense allowed a whopping 45.9 ppg last year, but with 6 starts and 22 lettermen back, they should be an improved group this time around. The DL is the strength of this defense, despite the fact that it has just 1 of 4 starters back. The LB corps has 2 of 3 starters back, plus thanks to the injuries last year they have some depth as well. Last year 11 different DBs made starts and 8 of them are back this year, so this will be an improved group as well.
The Cal Bears have fallen on hard time the last two year, but Sonny Dykes is an excellent coach and recruiter and he will have them turned around and playing in bowl games real soon, but it won’t happen this year. The Bears had a ton of injuries last year so some depth was developed on this team. The offense will be stronger with Goff running the show again, while the defense should chop off at least a TD from what they allowed last year. While improved overall, the schedule is still tough so it won’t show up in the standings, but they are pointed in the right direction. KEY TREND: 2-11 ATS in the 2nd of BB road games.
