The Washington Huskies are off a nice 9-4 season, which snapped a string of three 7-6 seasons in a row. Now Steve Sarkisian has departed and in steps Chris Petersen, who had a great run at Boise State. Steve has with 14 starters back and overall this team should be just as good as last year. QB Cyler Miles has been suspended for the opener vs Hawaii, due to an altercation at the Super Bowl, which means either Jeff Lundquist or Troy Williams will start the opener vs Hawaii. Miles has the potential to be a very good QB and was rated the #5 QB coming out of high school. Miles does lose two of 4 of the top 6 pass catchers back from last year, but Jaydon Mickens is back, after catching 65 passes for 688 yards and 5 TDs last year, along with senior Kasen Williams, who was highly touted but has yet lived up to his potential. This will be a solid group again, but still another wideout option must be found. The Running game will not be as explosive as last year due to the departure of Bishop Sankey. Swayne Washington (322 yards LY) and Deontae Cooper (270 yards) are the best options to replace Sankey and both will be running behind an OL that has all 5 starters back, with 4 of them being seniors. The OL is rated 9th best in the nation. The defensive line for the Huskies is also highly rated, checking in at 13th in the nation. The line has all 4 starters back, including Hau’oli Kikaha, who 13 sacks last year, with 3 of the 4 starters being seniors and there is solid depth behind this group. The secondary will be solid, by year’s end, but will go through some growing pains in the early going, with 2 freshmen and a sophomore in the starting 4. The two freshmen were rated 54th and 14th coming out of high school and they also. The LB corps will be average at best.
Chris Petersen did amazing things at Boise state and now he gets to use his talents at a more notable school, where he will be able to recruit even better than he did at Boise. This team does have a few question marks at WR, RB and will the secondary play to it’s potential as the season goes on. The strength of this team is clearly in the trenches and that is usually a good sign that the team will have success. Washington has tough road games vs Oregon and Arizona, but they also get Stanford, UCLA and Arizona State at home. This team could very well overtake Stanford for 2nd place in the Pac-12 South.
