Analysis: The Cincinnati Reds have lost 4 in a row to fall to 51-49 on the year and 4.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. The Reds have been very weak on offense this year, as they come in ranked 24th in the league in scoring (3.89 rpg), 22nd in hitting (.246) and 13th in homers (87). The pitching, though, has been been solid, as they rank 9th in the league in ERA (3.50) and 7th in WHIP (1.21). Getting the ball for the Reds today will be Mike Leake, who is 7-8 with a 3.63 ERA overall, while on the road he is 4-4 with a 3.53 ERA. Leake is 2-1 with a 4.43 ERA in 7 carer starts vs the Brewers.
The Milwaukee Brewers have been atop the NL Central for much of the year and right now are a game and a half ahead of the Cardinals and 4.5 games ahead of the Reds in the division. The Brewers have been a solid offensive team this year, as they come in ranked 7th in scoring (4.39 rpg), 9th in hitting (.257) and 9th in homers (97). The pitching has been average, as they are 16th in the league in ERA (3.80) and 10th in WHIP (1.25). Taking the hill for the Brewers today will be Kyle Lohse, who is 10-4 with a 3.16 ERA on the year overall, while at home he has gone 3-2 with a 2.43 ERA. Kyle is 5-5 with a 3.01 ERA in 17 career starts vs the Reds.
Pick: Going with the Brewers in this one. They seem to be playing much better right now and are catching a depleted Cincinnati squad at just the right time. Jay Bruce seems to be ailing and they are already without Phillips and Votto. Even with those guys in there this offense wasn't producing and it now much worse without them. Leake has pitched well on the road, but still he has a 3.53 ERA away from home, while Lohse has a 2.43 ERA at home, plus Lohse is 5-0 with a 3.02 ERA in day starts this year. The Brewers are also healthy on offense and have scored 4 rpg in their last games, while the Reds have put up just 2.2 rpg over the same stretch. Milwaukee should complete the sweep here.
