Major League Baseball Odds Pittsburgh Pirates vs St Louis Cardinals

Wednesday night baseball and we will see the Pittsburgh Pirates take on the St Louis Cardinals in game 2 of their 4 game series from Busch Stadium in St Louis, Missouri. First pitch is scheduled for an 8:15 PM (Eastern) start time and the game will be televised on ESPN.

Current Odds

Pittsburgh        +120
St Louis           -130

Over/ Under: 7.5 U -110

Analysis:  The Pittsburgh Pirates had won 6 of their last 7 games heading into this series, but the Cards have come up with a couple of walkoff wins to take the first 2 games of the series. The Pirates have been a good offensive team this year, as they come in ranked 16th in scoring (4.11 rpg) 8th in hitting (.258), and 13th in the league in homers (76). Better offense then what we have seem from the Pirates in the past. The pitching for the pirates has been very average, as they are 14th in the league in ERA (3.74) and 14th in WHIP (1.27). Getting the ball for the Pirates tonight will be Brandon Cumpton, who is 3-2 with a 4.61 ERA on the year overall, while on the road he has gone 1-1 with a 6.04 ERA. Brandon faced the Cards once last year and went 7 innings without allowing an ER in a 6-0 win.

The Cardinals have been up and down this year, but after taking the first two games of this series they are now just 3 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central.  Offensively, the Cardinals have struggled this year, ranking 29th in scoring (3.69 rpg), 17th in hitting (.250) and 29th in homers (52). This is not what we are used to seeing from the Cardinals offense. The pitching has been very good for the Cardinals, as they rank 7th in ERA (3.33) and 7th in WHIP (1.21). Getting the ball for St Louis tonight will be Lance Lynn, who is 9-6 with a 3.17 ERA on the year overall, while at home he has gone 5-2 with a 2.84 ERA. Lynn is 4-3 with a 5.12 ERA in 12 appearances (10 starts) vs the Pirates.

Pick:  I will look at the Cardinals in this one. Brandon Cumpton has been a mess this year and he has really struggled on the road with a 6.04 ERA. The Cards have taken the last 2 in dramatic fashion and I feel that should take some of the wind out of the sails of the Pirates. Lynn has struggled some with the Buccos, but he has been solid at home this year with a 5-2 record and a 2.84 ERA. I look for the Cards to make it 3 in a row over the Pirates in this one.
