Analysis: The Chicago Cubs have not had a good year so far, as they come in 36-46 on the year and are last in the NL Central, 13.5 games behind the Brewers, but they have taken the first 2 games of this series so far. The Cubs are not a very good offensive team, as they come in ranked 25th in the league in scoring (3.77 rpg), 29th in hitting (.231) and 17th in homers (70). The pitching has been decent for this team, as they come in ranked 10th in ERA (3.51) and 9th in WHIP (1.24). Getting the ball for the Cubs tonight will be Travis Wood, who is 7-6 with a 4.52 ERA overall, while on the road he is 4-4 with a 6.07 ERA. This will be his first ever meeting with the Cubs.
Boston is the defending champs, but they haven't really played like it this year. Boston is currently in 4th place in the AL East, 7.5 games behind the Blue Jays. A big part of their struggles is an offense that ranks 27th in scoring (3.75 rpg), 26th in hitting (.241) and 24th in homers (62). Really not Boston like numbers. The pitching has been average for this team as they come in ranked 14th in ERA (3.75) and 17th in WHIP (1.30). Brandon Workman will toe the rubber for the Sox tonight and he comes in with a 1-1 mark and a 3.27 ERA in 9 appearances (6 starts) this year. Brandon is 0-0 with a 3.17 ERA in 2 home starts this year.
Pick: Going with the Under here. A total of 5 runs have been scored between these teams in the first games of this series and I expect another low scoring one here. Travis Wood has struggled on the road this year, but he does have a 1.84 ERA in his last 2 road starts and he has allowed more than 3 ERs just once in his last 8 starts. Travis has a 2.79 ERA in his last 3 starts overall, the Sox don't hit lefties all that well and they also have never seen Travis. All goes to the advantage of the pitcher. Brandon Workman has been solid for Boston, as he has allowed more than 3 ER's just once in his 6 start, while posting a 2.75 ERA in his last 3 starts. The Cubs hit righties at just .218 on the road and Brandon also has the advantage of the Cubs never seeing him. These offenses are pathetic right now and the pitchers come in in good for, plus we note that the Under is 22-5 in Boston's last 27 home games. I would not at all be surprised to see another 2-1 type game here.
