Sunday Night Baseball Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees Start Time, Odds, Free Picks

Sunday Night Baseball and we will see the Boston Red Sox take on the New York Yankees in game 3 of their 3 game series from the Bronx. First pitch is scheduled for an 8:05 PM (Eastern) start time and the game will be televised on ESPN.

Current Odds

Boston              -105
New York          -105

Over/ Under: 8.5 U -115

Analysis: The Red Sox lost game 1 of this series, but got back on track with a nice 2-1 win last night over Tanaka.  The Sox still just 37-44 on the year and are currently 7 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East. Boston has really struggled at the plate this year, ranking 26th in the league in scoring (3.81 rpg), 23rd in hitting (.243) and 25th in homers (59). Numbers you are not used to seeing from the Sox. The pitching has been average for Boston as they are 14th in ERA (3.78) and 18th in WHIP (1.31). Getting the ball for the Sox will be John Lackey, who is 8-5 with a 3.45 ERA overall, while on the road he has gone 3-3 with a 4.37 ERA. Lackey is just 1-3 with an 8.10 ERA in 4 career starts in this park.

The New York Yankees are having a decent year so far, as they are 41-38 and are just 2 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yanks do come in struggling, as they have won just 2 of their last 8 games and that are just 18-19 at home this year. The Yankees are an average offensive team, as they rank 19th in scoring (4.04 rpg), 15th in hitting (.253) and 21st in homers (63). Pitching for the Yanks has been a bit below average, as they come in ranked 21st in ERA (4.05) and 15th in WHIP (1.28). Getting the ball for the Yanks will be Chase Whitley, who is 3-1 with a 4.07 ERA in 8 starts this year overall, while at home he has gone 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 2 starts. He has never faced the Red Sox.

Pick: Going to look Under in this one. Chase Whitley had a rough outing in his last start, allowing 8 ER's to the Blue Jays, but in his first 7 starts this year he posted a 2.56 ERA, allowing a TOTAL of 11 ER's over that stretch, while not allowing more than 3 ER's in any of those games. John Lackey has pitched well this year, but he is also coming off a rough outing, as he allowed 7 ERs to the Mariners. Now in his previous 11 starts he had allowed more than 3 ERs just once, while in his 6 starts prior to the Seattle game he had allowed a TOTAL of 8 runs, compiling an ERA of 1.60 in those 6 starts. I expect both pitchers to bounce back strong in this ESPN Sunday Nighter, where games tend to be lower scoring.
