The Indianapolis Colts had a very nice 11-5 year, which saw them easily win the AFC South. Now they are looking to build on that momentum, but the rest of the division is closing in on them so they may take a small step back here. Vegas has the Colts win total set at 9.5 (O -120… U -110). Let’s take a quick look at the Indianapolis Colts, along with their 2014 Schedule.
Last year the Colts ranked 14th in the league in scoring, at 24.4 ppg, while also ranking 15th in total yards (341.8 ypg), 17th in passing (232.8 ypg) and 20th in rushing (108.9 ypg). Andrew luck had a very nice Rookie and last year was even better for him and he did it with an inept running game, the loss of Reggie Wayne and OC Bruce Arians. This year Wayne is healthy and TY Hilton should have another big year, plus the addition of Hakeem Nicks, gives Luck a plethora of options to throw to. Oh and the also added Donte Moncreif (Ole Miss), who could step right in an big another big play threat for this team. The Running game is still a mystery, but with another year in this system, Trent Richardson should have a solid year and take some pressure off the OL, which di get an upgrade with the drafting of OT/G Jack Mewhort (Ohio State). Still not a great offense, but should be slightly better than last year’s group.
Defensively, the Colts ranked 9th in points allowed (21.0 ppg), 20th in yards allowed (357.1 ypg), 13th vs the pass (231.9 ypg) and 26th vs the run (125.1 ypg). The run defense always seems to be a problem for this team and last year was no different as they ranked 12th in that department. This year it doesn’t appear to be much better, especially if Robert Mathis is gone for the first few weeks of the year. The Colts do have a solid secondary, but until they can upgrade the DL then this team will continue to be a mediocre defense and a defense like that will not win many titles.
The Colts had a great season last year and even pulled off the biggest comeback in playoff history vs the Kansas City Chiefs, but this year the team really wasn’t upgraded all that much as they had just 5 picks in the draft, with the first one being the 59th overall pick and the rest of the division has improved as well, making the Colts task even tougher this year. Last year they won the division pretty much by default and while they still may win the division again, it will be a much closer race as I see just a 9-7 year from this team, which puts them under the posted win total of 9.5.
