Major League Baseball Picks San Francisco Giants vs St Louis Cardinals

Thursday night baseball and we will see the San Francisco Giants take on the St Louis Cardinals in game 1 of their 4 game series from Busch Stadium in St Louis. First pitch is scheduled for a 8:15 PM (Eastern) start time and the game will be televised Locally.

Current Odds

San Francisco       +116
St Louis                 -126

Over/ Under: 7.5 U -125

Analysis: The San Francisco Giants come in with the best record in baseball at 34-19 and are currently 5 games ahead of the LA Dodgers in the NL West. San Fran is 15-10 on the road this year, but just 2-5 in their last 7 games in St Louis. The Giants come in ranked 14th in the league in scoring (4.22 rpg), 19th in hitting (.245) and 3rd in homers (60). The pitching for the Giants has been very good, as they come in ranked 3rd in ERA (3.03) and 3rd in WHIP (1.17). Getting the Ball for the Giants tonight will be Ryan Vogelsong, who is 3-2 on the year with a 3.20 ERA. He has struggled some on the road, with a 1-1 mark and a 5.30 ERA. Ryan is 2-5 with a 6.71 ERA in 17 appearances (7 Starts) vs the Cardinals.

The St Louis Cardinals come in having won 10 of their last 14 games, to push their season record to 29-24, which currently has them at 2.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. The St Louis Cardinals have struggled to score this year as they rank 22nd in runs scored at 3.91 rpg. That is despite the fact that they are 8th in the league in hitting, with a .258 batting average. Pitching has not been an issue for this team, as they come in ranked 4th in ERA (3.25), 3rd in WHIP (1.17) and 7th in Ks (436). Jaime will toe the rubber for the Cards tonight and he comes in with a 1-0 mark and a 4.87 ERA in just 2 starts this year. Garcia is 2-1 with a 1.27 ERA in 4 career starts vs the Giants.

Pick:  I will be going with the Cardinals in this one. The Giants have the best record in baseball, but the Cards are really starting to play well, as they have won 10 of their last 14 games and they are 15-9 at home, plus have won 5 of the last 7 between these teams here. Jaime Garcia is a solid pitcher, especially in this park, where he is 22-12 with a 2.72 ERA in 50 career appearances (45 starts) during his career. Ryan Vogelsong has struggled on the road this year, with a 5.30 ERA and he is also 2-5 with a 6.71 ERA in his career vs the Cardinals. St Louis lost last night to the Yanks, but get back on track with a nice win here.
