Still, his two wins on dirt came against weak competition and non of his 3 career wins were at a distance of longer than 6.5 furlongs. The distance and the fact that his best beyer speed is just 85 are big reasons for him to be such a longshot.
Harry's Holiday is sired by Harlan's Holiday, who is a Multiple Grade 1 winner. Harlan’s Holiday got a taste of Triple Crown success in 2008 with Denis of Cork, who finished third in the Derby and second in the Belmont Stakes. Harlan's Holiday also sired Shanghai Bobby, who was the champion two-year-old male of 2012. Sadly, Harlan's Holiday passed away last year.
Corey Lanerie is realizing a dream by being selected to ride Harry's Holiday in this year's Kentucky Derby. Corey has spent 23 years as a jockey and has had over 25,000 starts in his career, but this will be his first every start in the Derby. Lanerie won the 2014 Woolf Award, which is an award that is chosen by peer jockeys and recognizes one rider each year for their outstanding career and personal character.
Harry's Holiday seems a bit outmatched in the Derby and is worthy of his longshot odds.
