2014 Kentucky Derby Odds We Miss Artie

The 140th run for the roses is takes place this Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The Kentucky Derby official start time is 6:24 pm ET. There are several Longshots in the event, including We Miss Artie, who has been installed as 50/1 Odds to win the Derby.

We Miss Artie's Record: 3-2-0 in 8 Races. Trainer: Todd Pletcher. Jockey: Javier Castellano Sire: Artie Schiller  Dam: Athena's Gift  Best Beyer Speed: 89

This colt is a multiple graded winner, including a Grade 1 (Breeders’ Futurity), and is owned by multiple Eclipse winners (the Ramseys) and trained by a shoo-in Hall of Famer (Pletcher). Those are some solid pluses, but still he’s winless in three starts, including a nonthreatening seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and a distant eighth in the Fountain of Youth. Pletcher is a great trainer, but his Derby record (1 for 36) has been noticeably poor.

We Miss Artie is sired by Artie Schiller, who has won seven stakes races from 2004-05, while defeating champion and future Derby sire Leroidesanimaux in the 2005 Breeders’ Cup Mile. His Dam is Athena's Gift, who won both her races on grass, and is a daughter of 2000 Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus. Athena’s Gift, won twice on Woodbine’s turf at one mile and 1 1/8 miles.

The Jockey for We Miss Artie will be Javier Castellano, who has 123 wins in 443 races this year. He also tops the Jockey money lis for 2014 so far with nearly $6.5 million. He had his first winner at Calder in 1997, while his biggest victories were with Ghostzapper in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic and Bernardini in the 2006 Preakness.

We Miss Artie has thrived in two-turn events, and his bloodlines suggest that the Derby’s 1 1/4 miles should be within his scope, but still it's hard to see him making a whole lot of noise vs a stacked upper half of the Derby.

Here are a few Kentucky Derby Records: There have been two Jockey’s that have won the Derby 5 times each and they are Eddie Arcaro and Bill Hartack.

The Trainer with the most Derby wins is Ben A. Jones, who collected 6 with 5 of those coming with Jockey Eddie Arcaro.

That fastest time comes from Secretariat, who ran the Derby at 1:59:40 back in 1973. Secretariat is the only horse to run the Derby in under 2 minutes.
