The Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks meet up tonight in Game 7 of the NHL Playoffs tonight. The game is scheduled for a 10:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on the NBC Sports Network. Currently the odds for the game have the Sharks listed as the favorite to win this contest tonight.
Just three teams in NHL Playoff history have come back from a 3-0 series deficit to win the final four games. Los Angeles is just the ninth team to force a Game 7 after falling in the opening three games. San Jose has done this recently, taking a 3-0 series lead over the Detroit Red Wings in 2011, but they came back to win the seventh game 3-2.
When the series started, Game 7 seemed like a very real possibility. But after San Jose jumped to a 3-0 series lead, not many thought it would get to this position. This game will have a lot of emotion as two rivals meet with one having their season coming to an end.
Jonathan Quick is the best goalie in the league, but allowed 16 goals in the opening three games. The next three games saw the Sharks score just seven tallies. Quick's 3.47 goals against average is very bloated compared to his past and the .901 save percentage has increased the last few games, but still isn't anywhere near his normal number.
Los Angeles won each of the last three games of this series by three goals. The Sharks are absolutely playing bad at the wrong time right now but if they can get a goal past Quick early in the contest, they'll be able to have less pressure on them. But, if the Kings are able to score first in tonight's game and take an early advantage, the Sharks will certainly begin pressing and that's when mistakes can happen.
Kings forward Justin Williams has scored a pair of goals in the fourth and sixth games. He notched both goals over the Sharks in Game 7 last year, a Kings win in the second round. In Game 7's Williams has been a monster, scoring five times and adding four assists. His teams have won all four Game 7s he has been in.
A victory tonight would put the Kings in the same sentence as Philadelphia (2010), the New York Islanders (1975) and Toronto (1942) as the only teams to overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a best-of-seven series.
Tonight's game will be emotional, physical and fun to watch. We're calling for the upset here tonight with the Kings getting the victory. Los Angeles is riding a lot of momentum heading into this game and the Kings can make NHL history tonight. Look for Williams and Quick to both have big games as the Kings march on to the second round and the Sharks whip out the golf clubs.
