The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees will meet up against tonight in Major League Baseball action. The game is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on MLB.tv in addition to being televised locally in both markets. Currently the odds for the game have the Red Sox favored on the road.
We've reached the 10-game mark for many Major League Baseball teams and the Yankees at 5-5 are one game ahead of the Red Sox, who sport a 4-6 mark on the season. Last night the Yanks knocked off the Red Sox when they got a 4-1 win behind the solid pitching of Michael Pineda. In tonight's game we have Boston's Jon Lester taking on CC Sabathia.
Lester hasn't won yet this season, sitting at 0-2 with an ERA of just 2.51 on the year. He's pitched well but hasn't been able to get one in the win column as the Red Sox scored just one run in his two games. Lester has a combined 14 1/3 innings of work so far in his season scattering 13 hits and striking out 14 combined against the Milwaukee Brewers and the Baltimore Orioles. Current Yankees have 311 at bats against Lester and have hit .264 against him. Derek Jeter and Ichiro both have good numbers against Lester in their careers.
Lester is 11-5 with a 3.96 ERA in his 26 career starts against the Yankees. Last year Lester was 10-0 when his team scored at least six runs during his starts.
Sabathia has started the year with a 1-1 record, having beat the Toronto Blue Jays but not being able to knock off the Houston Astros to begin the year. Sabathia isn't the pitcher he used to be but he can still command the plate. Current Red Sox hitters have 301 combined plate appearances against him and have hit .256 collectively against him. David Ortiz has gone deep twice against Sabathia while Dustin Pedroia hits better than .300 against Sabathia in more than 50 plate appearances.
Sabathia has struggled against Boston in his career, going just 10-11. He has gone 8-7 against them since he joined the Yankees, however, in 20 starts dating back to 2009.
The Red Sox starting hitting the baseball against Texas, taking two of three games, clubbing 32 hits. If Boston can bop Sabathia around in this game, they can pick up a win in the Bronx. We like the pitching matchup between these two clubs tonight, but we also expect a lot of offense in this one as well.
Boston has become the road favorite in this game. They lost last night to Pineda and the Yanks and many feel that the pinstripe starter was using pine tar on his hand. Pineda denied the accusations, saying it was just "dirt" on his hand. It's just another portion of the Yankee/Red Sox rivalry that leaves us wanting more. Tonight we expect another great game between these clubs.
