MLB Thursday Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees Start Time, Odds, Free Pick

Thursday night baseball and we will see the Boston Red Sox take on the New York Yankees in game 1 of their 4 game series from Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York. First pitch is scheduled for a 7:05 PM (Eastern) start time and the game will be televised on the MLB Network.

Current Odds

Boston           -105
NY Yankees   -105

Over/ Under: 8.5 -110

Analysis: The Boston Red Sox had a late come from behind win last night, when David Ortiz hit a 3 -run pinch hit homer in the bottom of the 8th inning to give the Sox a 4-2 lead.  Koji Uehara then pitched a perfect 9th inning to grab his 2nd save of the young season. The Sox are now 4-5 on the year as they head to the Bronx for a 4 games series with the Yanks. Boston was able to muster just 4 hits last night and now they are hitting .277 on the year, which is 4th in the league, while they have scored just 3.89 rpg, which is 17th. Getting the Ball for the Sox is Clay Buchholz, who was rocked for 13 hits and 6 runs in just 4.1 innings of work in his first outing of the year, which was vs Milwaukee. Clay faced the Yanks 3 times last year and went 3-0 with an 0.50 ERA in those games.

For the Yanks they are off back-to-back home losses vs the Orioles, in which they were outscore 19-8 in the two games. The losses now have the Yanks at 4-5 on the year overall and 1-2 at home. Like the Sox, the Yanks have had problems scoring runs this year as they have averaged just 3.67 rpg, which is good for 22nd in the league. Now also like the Sox, they are a good hitting team as they come in with a .271 BA, which is 8th in the league. Pitching has not been up to snuff for this team as they rank 23rd in the league in ERA (4.85). Getting the ball tonight will be Michael Pineda, who is 0-1 on the year, but in that loss he allowed just 1 ER on 5 hits in 6 innings of work. Michael faced the Sox just once in his career and that was back in 2011 as a member of Seattle. In that game he allowed 7 ERs in just 4.1 innings of work.

Pick:  Going with the Red Sox in this one. Clay Buchholz can't have a worse outing than he did in his first start this year. That start was a bit surprising, considering the fact that he is 57033 in his career as a starter and he is a combined 34-12 from March through June in his career. I look for him to bounce back vs a Yanks squad that he was 3-0 with an 0.50 ERA vs last year. Michael Pineda is not a great starter, as he is just 9-10 with a 3.66 ERA in his career and he was shelled in his only ever start vs the Sox. Neither team is scoring much, but Boston still has a solid edge on offense and they should start this series with a nice win, as Clay gets back on track.
