The Los Angeles Dodgers welcome in the Detroit Tigers tonight in Major League Baseball action. The game is scheduled for a 10:10 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on MLB.tv in addition to locally in both markets. Currently the odds for the game have Detroit listed as a road favorite.
Detroit is sending Max Scherzer to the hill in tonight's game. He's the reigning Cy Young award winner, going 21-3 last season with a 2.90 ERA and striking out 240 hitters in 2013. Opposing hitters hit just .198 last year. So far in 2014 Scherzer has a 0.00 ERA as he didn't allow a run in a no decision against Kansas City. He scattered four hits and walked one in that game, where he struck out seven Royals.
Current Dodgers have 90 plate appearances against Scherzer, but they're hitting just .189 against him in those at bats. Andre Ethier is the only Dodger to take Scherzer deep and he has six hits in 15 at bats (.400) against the hard-throwing righty. He's the only Dodger with any real success against Scherzer currently on the Dodger roster. Yet, Scherzer is just 1-3 with a 4.55 ERA against the Dodgers.
Los Angeles will send veteran Dan Haren to the mound tonight. He's 1-0 this season having beaten the San Diego Padres last week. He scattered four hits and allowed an unearned run in that victory over the Padres. The 11-year vet has allowed Tigers to hit .205 against him in 146 plate appearances. Both Victor Martinez and Miguel Cabrera have homered against Harren in their careers and Martinez has faced him 26 times, collecting nine hits (.346) while Cabrera has hit just .211 against Harren, totaling four hits in 19 at bats.
These teams could be facing each other in the World Series later this year. Both are two very talented teams and might be the most talented in each of their respective leagues. They've never faced each other in the Fall Classic.
There's been a lot of problems with the Dodgers so far this season, mainly with Yasiel Puig. He didn't play in Los Angeles' last game because of a strained thumb ligament after he was benched for the home opener Friday because he arrived late to the ballpark. It's clear manager Don Mattingly is looking to make an example of Puig by not putting up with his repeated antics.
Matt Kemp looks healthy and should have a great season. He is yet to collect a hit against Scherzer in his career. Both he and shortstop Hanley Ramirez had two homer games as the Dodgers beat the Giants on Sunday night.
This has the makings of a pretty solid game and we think the boys from Motown have a great shot to win. The Tigers are road favorites and we expect Scherzer to come out and have a great outing.
