The Cincinnati Reds take on the St. Louis Cardinals in the second game of the series tonight in Major League Baseball. The game is scheduled for an 8:15 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on MLB.tv. Currently the odds for the game have Cardinals favored at home in this matchup.
St. Louis got a 5-3 win in the opening game of this series last night. The Reds banged out 10 hits in that game, but Michael Wacha was able to allow only one run in seven innings of work for the Cardinals.
In tonight's game, Lance Lynn will get the rock for St. Louis. He picked up a victory against Cincinnati last week when he threw five innings and allowed three earned runs to beat the Reds. He scattered eight hits in that contest to Cincinnati hitters, throwing 107 pitches and walking just one, but striking out seven. He'll want to be more efficient in this outing tonight. Three Cincinnati hitters — Jay Bruce, Zack Cozart and Todd Frazier — have all taken Lynn deep twice in their careers. The Reds have had some success against Lynn in his outings against them in his career, with current Cincinnati hitters clubbing a .297 average in 111 plate appearances.
Yet, Lynn has compiled a 1.20 ERA and 0.93 WHIP while winning both of his starts over three appearances against Cincinnati at home last season. He also went 3-1 against the Reds in 2013.
Homer Bailey is getting the ball for Cincinnati tonight. In his opening game of the season he got knocked around by St. Louis, allowing four runs on seven hits in just 4 1/3 innings of work. It certainly wasn't the start to the season that Bailey wanted. Facing the Cardinals isn't the ideal situation for Bailey, who has been beat up by St. Louis in his career. In his last 10 starts against the Cardinals, Bailey is just 4-5 and allowing 26 earned runs in just over 58 innings.
Current Cardinals are hammering Bailey to a .324 average in 179 plate appearances. Matt Holliday and Yadier Molina each have a pair of home runs against Bailey in their careers while Matt Carpenter has 11 hits in 19 (.579) plate appearances against the right hander.
The Cardinals are 1-0 at home so far this year, beating Cincinnati on Monday. The Reds are just 1-3 on the road this season and 2-5 overall.
This should be an entertaining game and we like a lot of offense in this contest. Look for St. Louis to come out on top.
