Analysis: The Red Sox ranked 1st in the league in runs scored at 853, which was 57 runs more than the 2nd ranked team (Detroit) scored. It may be hard for them to score that many runs again this year, but clearly this offense is very good. Shane Victorino is back and is one of the better leadoff men in the league, while Daniel Nava is good in the two hole and will get on base plenty for a very good middle of the lineup that includes Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz and Mike Napoli to drive him in. Ortiz had a huge year last year as he hit .303, with 30 HRs and 103 RBIs. You can expect similar numbers from him this year. The bottom of the lineup is also solid with Will Middlebrooks and AJ Pierzynski both having solid home run power and the ability to drive in runs. Jon lester gets the ball for the Sox and he looked good in the spring, throwing 34.67 innings, while posting a 1.56 ERA. Last year he was 1-2 with a 4.70 ERA in 4 starts vs the Orioles.
Last year the Orioles finished 5 th in runs scored (745), 1 st in homeruns (212) and 10 th in batting average (.260) this was a stacked offense last year and this year they have the ability to be just as good. Chris Davis is back after leading the league in homers with 53, while also driving in 138 runs. Will be hard for him to duplicate those numbers, but at least 35 HR’s and 100 RBIs can be expected from him. Behind him is Adam Jones, who hit 33 HRs and drove in 108 runs a year ago, and behind him is newly acquired Nelson Cruz, who hit 26.5 homers per year in his last 6 years with Texas. After Cruz is Chris Weiters (65 HRs last 3 years and JJ Hardy (77 HRs last 3 years). Not sure there is a more feared 3-7 lineup in the league. Chris Tillman went 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA last year and he is 3-1 with a 2.65 ERA in 6 starts vs the Red Sox.
Pick: Jon Lester struggled with this team last year, but he still gets the edge over Tillman and that the way I will go here. I look for Boston to start their title defense with a win.
